We express depression in many ways.
Depression can sometimes create feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, guilt, emptiness, and numbness. Some people with depression display negative self-talk, isolation, angry outbursts, and irritability.
A depressed mood can make you feel down or less interested in activities you once enjoyed.
Slowed thinking, moving, speaking, and difficulty concentrating are other expressions of depression.
There is a physical side to depression – that can cause changes in weight or appetite, loss of energy and motivation, and fatigue.
Unfortunately, depression can also cause you to have thoughts of death or suicide.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, you have come to the right page.
Some depression is natural – some not.
Most people feel sad, lonely, or depressed at times. There is nothing wrong with these feelings brushing along our life. It’s a normal response to loss, life struggles, or emotional hurt. But sometimes, these feelings become so overwhelming that they can prevent us from leading our regular lives.
Do you remember when you used to have a routine and would put yourself first? You felt great waking up and looking forward to your days. Getting out of bed without hitting the snooze isn’t even an option now. Shower? Yeah, right. Dry shampoo, throwing your hair back, and maybe brushing your teeth will happen today.
Work? Not much effort is needed because you work from home. No one is even going to see you today. Pajama day at work! Again, and again, and again. Rinse, repeat, and life keeps going. You aren’t going anywhere. You feel so unmotivated to do anything at all.
You don’t care what you put into your body and eat whatever is most accessible, maybe food delivery again. Your job is sedentary, but you have no desire to see what the weather is like outside. You feel gross and so deep into your dark hole that there is no way out.
You wonder, “What has happened to the person I was?”
With depression – the causes can differ.
Depression has many faces and can look different in others. Often people think of a more extreme version of feeling sad and not wanting to get out of bed. While this may be true for some people, in others, it can feel more like irritability, anger, numbness, overeating, drinking, wanting to isolate yourself from others, doing everything with a led blanket, wanting to sleep a lot, etc.
Depression can affect all ages. Many older adults who move from an independent lifestyle to one more dependent upon others can experience depression. Children and teens have social and peer pressures that result in feelings of depression. Drinking alcohol, using illegal drugs, overeating, or having an addiction cause feelings of depression.
The holidays are challenging times for many and bring up old memories. Other conditions, such as menopause or chronic pain, stress, fatigue, recent childbirth, or postpartum depression, are also common depression problems.
Sometimes, we hide our depression.
The person people see at work, school, or socially may be the life of the party and seem so together and happy. But behind closed doors is another version of ourselves.
People have no idea about our pain and isolation. We did this to ourselves, right? We probably deserved it.
Or maybe we experience depression that is all-encompassing and frequently miss work, school, or social events because we can’t find the motivation.
Rather than hiding how you feel, a better way is to seek help through therapy and learn to overcome your depression.
